Best Math Games

Do you need math games? These math apps are great for reviewing concepts, maintaining skills during the summer or just fun practice for the young learner. You will find addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Word problems, money and time games. All necessary skills to learn for the primary school student.

These app have been used in my classroom. Sometimes the same skills presented in a different form makes it “funner to do.” Getting to use the iPad is an extra plus to make it fun to do. So much easier for the physically impaired. Instead of holding a pencil, tap, swipe and you are completing the math games.

Drill Math Word Problems has a fun presentation. It has a chalkboard you can write on with your fingers. But you don’t have to use it. Just tap on the answer and speed your way through it. Once the skill is understood it’s fun to have a new techie way to review the skills. Good bye smelly mimeograph paper.

For others who don’t have access to the iPad not to fear, I have found comparable math apps for my friends who use Android.

Math Bug Free

3.5 STARS out of 5

How fun is this math game. Although it is rated 3.5 my students loves it. When the wrong answer is selected the bird hollers "OW!", so they make sure they select the correct answer. But if they hear an "OW!" they laugh and continue you saying, "sorry bird!"

The game utilizes a number problem they can see plus objects they can count to add or subtract.

Place Value Chart
By Ulrich Kortenkamp
New app - not enough ratings

This app feels like a math game but the child slowly realizes the relationship or the meaning of ones, tens and hundred when they see 10 dot meld into one or 100 burst out from one dot when it is moved into the 10s column.

My Special Needs students enjoy seeing the dots increase and decrease but when we were able to add to the app by stacking 10 cubes together and holding it vertically in front of there eyes and explain, “that’s why the dots disappeared”. The lightbulbs went on.

Using some activities provided by the app maker, see below, we had fun today:
- How can you create large numbers using the least number of tokens?
- What happens if a token is moved from the hundreds to the ones? And what happens if you first move it to the tens place and then to the ones?

Remove tokens by moving them to the top of the chart. Shake your iPad or iPhone to remove all of them. I recommend hand over hand shaking of the iPad, just incase it slips out of their grip.

It supports the development of mental concepts for place values in decimal systems and targets elementary and primary education. It can be used it at any academic level because it looks age appropriate for any age.

This is an easy to use app. Read the math problem. Tap the correct answer from a choice of 4. You get to select easy, medium or hard. You will also be able to control the sound off if it bothersome.

The Addition Word Problems are free. The other concepts subtraction, algebra, geometry and telling time are all paid for products.
