Free Knitting Apps

Do you need free knitting inspiration? I have been inspired to knit by a set of books. Most inspiring for me was watching Outlander and seeing all the gorgeous yarn shawls, cowls, and hand warmers.

And so for 2016, I am inspired to knit an Aran sweater. I have the pattern but I am in need of help, so I searched for apps that can help me.

I found a texture app that will help me learn the pattern, a counter and a great app to help me keep my Projects and Needles and new abbreviations in check.

Here are the best free apps to start you off. Most have in app purchases for more instructions but these are great place to start.

* MAGIC MARKERS to find like stitches and then color, highlight, and count them.
* REMINDERS for "at the same time" instructions so you never miss a step.
* INVERTED MARKERS are easy on the eye and make color-coded/colorwork charts a breeze.
* APPEND clues for Mystery KALs.

Free Knitting Buddy seems to be an all in one app for knitters and crocheters. Knitting Buddy has a row counter, repeat counter, project timer, notes pages, and it even displays your knitting pattern on the row counter page! In addition to tracking projects, free knitting buddy allows you to track your needles, hooks, and your yarn.

Below are the features included in the app.

MULTIPLE PROJECT SUPPORT: No limit to the number of knitting or crochet projects that you can track. Each project has individualized settings.

ROW COUNTER: Track the current row of your knitting or crochet project. The row numbers are displayed nice and big on the main page. Increase (or decrease) the row number by pushing on an actual "button" on a knit background.

REPEAT COUNTER: Track the current repeat row, and optionally link the repeat counter to the row counter. You can specify the number of repeat rows on the project settings page.

DISPLAY PATTERN: Take a screen shot of your knitting pattern and display it on the main project page. This feature is super handy as it eliminates the need to switch between applications or to carry a paper copy of your pattern.

NEEDLE/HOOK TRACKER / LOG: Track all of your knitting needles. The log displays US, metric, and UK sizes, and allows you to track needle length, material, type, and whether or not the needle is in use.

PROJECT TIMER: Ever wonder how long it actually takes to complete a knitting or crochet project? Use the project timer to track the time it takes to complete each project. Each project has an individual timer that must be manually started/stopped.

NOTES PAGE: Track all of the project's notes, such as yarn, yarn weight, needles, gauge, and other notes. Please email the developer if you have additional items that you would like to track!

PROJECT SETTINGS: Completely customize your Knitting Buddy experience. The screen can be tailored to according to your preferences, such as showing or hiding features such as repeat rows, knitting pattern, project timer, and project progress.

TRACK PROGRESS: Set the total number of rows for your knitting project, and Knitting Buddy will track your percent complete.

KNITTING NEEDLE AND CROCHET HOOK SIZE CHARTS: Convert needle sizes between metric, U.S. sizes, and U.K. sizes and crochet hooks between metric, numeric, and letter.

YARN CHARTS: Helpful data to convert different sizes of yarn.

SOCK CHARTS: Common foot sixes for men, women, and children!

Here is another free knitting app that will help you learn new stitches. See their description.

Favorites: This list of stitch types is created by you! At each stitch’s details page, there is an option to add that stitch to your favorites list. Add as many stitch types as you want, and delete any stitch types at any time by tapping on the star again in the stitch's details page you want to remove. If a stitch has a green star, it means it is included in your favorites list.

Search: Currently you can search by keywords, or a combination of keywords and categories. The keywords you type will search not only through the stitch type names, but also their description and instructions. Example searches include:

*A Few for Free
*Knit Purl

Knit and Crochet Counter
By Marc Chametzky
4.5 STARS out of 5

the following is the description of their free knitting app from the developer.

It's easy to use the counter. Simply tap on the displayed number and it will increment. If you make a mistake and need to undo a row, no problem — the Knit and Crochet Counter app will let you adjust your counter easily, including rapidly increasing or decreasing the count, or even resetting to start over.

Pattern repeats are also handled by the counter. Simply specify your starting and ending row numbers and let the counter keep track of your repeats for you, including which row of the pattern you're currently on, how many times you've repeated that section, and how many rows you've done in total.

It can store counters for many projects at once. Each of your projects can be given its own name, background fabric type, and customized color. You may also choose a photo from your photo library or take one with your device's camera to be the counter background.

You may take notes for each of your counters and access it easily while you're using the counter. The notes are displayed right next to the counter for easy reference.

On-screen notions permit you to select additional information related to your project to be displayed on the counter screen. Among the new information available is time-related information including elapsed time and even an estimation of how much time is left to finish the project.

Counters are able to be conveniently synchronized among all of your iOS devices. There's no more worrying about ensuring that you have the right device with your project's counter on it.
