Free Apps to learn
The Ancient Art of Tai Chi

Tai Chi Students

Do you want to download apps to learn the ancient art of Tai Chi? These free apps will help you learn the basics, nothing beats working with a trained master there you can ask questions.

Not all the apps are free but that doesn’t mean that the free apps are of poor quality. I have listed some paid apps for your convenience.

Tai Chi is called a moving meditation. Give the moving meditation a try. Every joint in your body will get a workout. There is music that can be used during Tai Chi or times of quiet reflection. And I suggest some QiGong warm up exercises before starting your forms. At the bottom of the page is a list of recommended Tai Chi websites.

These free apps at Android Market and iTunes claims to be a 10 minute long sample video of Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan. Unfortunately, it is only about 2 minutes long. I could not find anywhere a video 10 minutes long. In the video the movements I saw were graceful yet strong. I would love to learn Tai Chi from this master.

It was also advertised, ‘a sample tao lu (sequence of movements) to practice yourself.’ I couldn’t find a move labeled as such. The free version app did not meet my expectations. But I will say to see what Yang style Tai Chi looks like this app will show you. If you really want to try Tai Chi the free apps are a great place to start but to find a master is the ultimate.

Mark Yang has created a website and a series of free apps because he admires his father, who has “played” Tai Chi for about 20 years; this part one of a five part series. You will be able to study the 24 forms, basic to tai chi, step by step in animation form. This app supports English, Chinese and French.

Mark Yang feels it is more effective to refer to the movement as you do it on the mobile phone. He reminds you to warm up before playing Tai Chi.

There is an old Chinese saying "拳打千遍,其意自现" which means, "You will know what Tai Chi is after you practice about thousand times".

My tai Chi experience tells me this is a true statement

There is no, “I finally got it right”, in Tai Chi. It is always right for you at your level.

Note: You will need iOS 5.0 or later. If you have a lower iOS version, please update to run this app. The semi animated Tai Chi practitioner is very good. The written instructions are very good. The verbal instructions were very hard to understand. I just couldn't get use to her accent.

The exercises are simple but effective in building stamina and relaxing the mind. Just because the exercises are simple does not mean you do them the number of times indicated and your done. Oh no, you must work for precise physical movements and mental concentration each time. If you find that you are thing about other things while practicing Tai Chi then you are not doing Tai Chi.

Only the first section of 5 is a free app the other four you must pay for in-app.
