Learn Fractions in a Fun and Easy Way

What to do with Fractions? To learn that a piece of anything belongs to a larger group a difficult concept. Or to share something with many friends is difficult too. I know how I learned the concept of half. Mom always made us share a large piece of anything. Lucky for me there were only the two of us and we learned what HALF meant at an early age.

In my classroom, half is an easy concept to teach. Dividing things up by the number of people in the classroom is easy. But having to add it up and finding the lowest common denominator is a terror to teach and to learn. These are the apps, I use and plan to use in the classroom as the students progress.

There are not very many fraction apps at the Google play (Android) to learn how to identify, add, subtract and use the fractions within a fun, learning app. Most of them are in a calculator form, punch in the numbers and the calculations are done.

Using the iPad or any electronic device makes the math concept easier for both the learner and the teacher. GrasshopperApps.com highly recommended.

Match the Fraction

I’ve used white board drawings, rip up construction paper, create plates with a paper pizza cut into wedges and worksheets. Just not the same as using any electronic device, a computer or an iPad.

This is an easy matching game. Match the part of the pizza to the fraction. The audio cues are great, the customization for this app is incredible. Check out the list from GrasshopperApps.com.

Features and Customization:

✔ Match parts of a pizza from 1/2 all the way up to 9/10ths of a pizza

✔ Match parts of a pizza to other parts of a pizza representing the same quantity (e.g. 1/2 vs. 2/4, etc.)

✔ All activities are grouped into individual skills so you decide when your kid is ready for the next level

✔ Turn Tile Magnets ON or OFF from the settings page. The tile magnet automatically snaps tiles in their place. This is great for toddlers with little fingers but now you can turn this off if you are ready to take your skills to the next level.

✔ Add your own voice - now your toddler can learn everything in mommy's or daddy's voice

✔ Audio hints - turn audio hints where the items is read out loud on touch on or off

✔ Uses real, crisp professional images that are carefully handpicked and crafted vs. cartoonish illustrations

✔ Fun & engaging voice artist keeps kids engaged

✔ Multi-sensory learning tool - combining seeing, hearing, and tactile feedback

✔ Multi-language support - since you can edit all existing items and sounds so you can record everything in your native tongue

Pizza Fraction 1

3.5 STARS out of 5

A very easy to use app. The only physical skill needed is to tap. It has an option to advance questions by shaking the device or using a button. I say change option to tap the button. Lifting the device and shaking it, is scary to me. I wouldn’t want to hear, “Oops, I dropped it”, in my class.

For those who need to count the pieces of the pizza, you can touch the screen to count the pieces and nothing happens. The screen does not move unless of course the whole screen is swiped. It is difficult to swipe the whole screen but it has been done in my class.

The pizzas shown are sliced pieces from half to sixth in the easy level, half to ninth in the medium level, and half to twelfth in the hard level. 3 fraction choices are given, tap the correct fraction, tap next then answer 10 questions. Number correct answers plus the time it took to answer 10 questions determines the score for each round.

Basic Fraction

Around the 5th grade level. But this would be great advance work and a great review for others. There are so many features to use. Make it more difficult, use percentage and decimals. This one is more work than play.

Learn and practice the fundamental concepts including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Extensions to fraction include algebra (introduction through Find x questions), decimal and percentage.

2 games are provided to make these fraction drills fun. If you have paid for the app it is unlimited play. If you are using a free app you have to get 10 answers right or do a few other things before you get one game token. Tic-Tac-Toe is a 2-player game where players take turn to mark the board and work on fractions. Word Galaxy is a single-player game that will flex the left and right hemisphere of the brain while the player solves fraction questions and a word/phrase puzzle.

Chicken Coop Fractions Game

I wonder if my students would be able to learn to estimate a fraction onto a decimal number line by playing this game? I wonder if they will get the sense of the fraction being more than half or less than half? I will have to try.

Player gets 10 Questions. Tap the nest onto the number line near the right spot. If the estimate is close enough the egg falls into the nest. If the estimate is off, the egg splats onto the number line. When 10 question items are finished the number of eggs caught will hatch.

The faces on the hen as they are laying the eggs is so funny.

Improve the ability to estimate fractions with this wonderful educational game!
